Read 2 Samuel 8:15 through 10:19

Published: Mar 24, 2017

David wanted to know if there was anyone left of the house of Saul to whom he could show kindness. Ziba, a servant of Saul’s family was summoned. In their culture, physical impairment was a great source of shame. Perhaps that explains the manner in which Ziba answered.

“There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet” (2 Samuel 9:3).

Maybe Ziba was surprised when David asked where Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, was and summoned him to the palace. Imagine Mephibosheth’s reaction. It had to be difficult for him to enter and bow before his uncle, the king whom his grandfather had tried to kill, the king with whom another uncle had waged a civil war. But David reassured him, “Don’t be afraid.”

David ordered that Mephibosheth receive all that had been Saul’s. And he was invited to always eat at the king’s table with David’s own sons. All the shame and reproach of the past was gone. David had shown him the tender heart of God.

Challenge for Today: Visit those who are in a nursing home or a hospital; volunteer at a food bank or a rehabilitation center.
