Obedience First

Read 1 Chronicles 20:4 through 22:19; John 5:19–47

As the volunteer children’s director at her church, Paula was up to her eyeballs with Vacation Bible School preparations. It was just a week away, and she still needed to buy craft supplies, meet with the music team, and recruit three group leaders. With everything to do, she had neglected time with God and her family. She figured the VBS was more important since it was God’s work.

“May the Lord give you discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God” (1 Chronicles 22:12).

David was giving advice to his son, Solomon, regarding his task of building the temple of the Lord. Notice that David didn’t ask that the Lord give Solomon understanding about how to build the temple but about how to keep the Law of the Lord.

Focusing on obedience to God helps put everything else into perspective and gives us the right attitude needed to do God’s will. So when it comes to living for God, obedience comes first and everything else after that.

Challenge for Today: Take a day to concentrate on simply obeying God’s commands.

Quicklook: 1 Chronicles 22:6–16
