Mark 16:29 Message Then the Master Jesus, after briefing them, was taken up to heaven, and he sat down beside God in the place of honor.
Todd Smith, in his book, He Sat Down points out that Jesus sat down for two reasons:
- His work was finished.
- It is our turn to work.
We have been commissioned to do the work that Christ has started. It is not for some Christians to do, or only for Pastors, Board Members, or teachers to do, but for everyone who is called by the name of Jesus; to preach the Gospel to every creature.
Some have called it the Great Omission because of the church’s seemingly indifference to the plight of the lost. But Jesus told us we are to do the works he did, and even greater works.
The early church prayed for boldness to speak in His name, and then miracles followed.
There is a story of when Jesus went back to heaven. The angels gathered, and asked him if he had died for man’s sin, to which Christ said, “yes”. Then they asked, “what is your plan”.
And Jesus said, “I have left it in the hands of 12 men.”
Then they asked, “what is your back up plan”. And Jesus said, “I have no back up plan.”
The son, or daughter, the husband or wife, the uncle or aunt, the nephew or niece, the neighbor on your left or right, the co-worker you know so well, the clerk at the store, or the waitress who serves you, are all waiting for an invitation. How will they hear if someone is not sent?
Miracles happen when some-one decides to reach out in Jesus’ name.
There is no back up plan
